Several customers have asked me if there are any cordless steam mops or cleaners on the UK market.
Cordless steam mops would operate without an electrical power cable. They would be battery powered. Either in the steam mop or as a separate unit, usually where the mop is stored.
I have completed some research and there are currently no cordless steam mops in the UK market.
This I believe is because you require a large amount of electricity to generate steam.
I have although reviewed previously two cordless appliances, very similar to steam mops. They are the Vileda 100c Hot Spray Mop and the Dyson DC56 Hard.
Vileda 100 Hot Spray Mop
It works in a similar way to steam mops. It cleans by a combination of a hot water spray and microfibre cloth instead of using stream. To power it up you just plug in for 90 seconds and then unplug and it is ready for 30 minutes use. It is suitable for use on sealed hard floors.
Dyson DC56 Hard
This combines the functions of a vacuum cleaner with that of a steam mop. It cleans by using a vacuum first and then steam. It recharges by the use of a wall mount, which you can hang it on. It takes about 3.5 hours to charge and the charge lasts for about 15 minutes run time. It is also suitable for on hard sealed floors.
Advantages of Cordless Steam Mops
There would be an advantage of developing cordless steam mops. You would no longer have the problem of tripping over cables or unplugging and plugging back into another socket. Unfortunately, I think the reason that they are currently not available on the market is because steam mops take up quite a bit of energy. So having a powerful enough battery to give a reasonable running time could be a problem.
I would think that it would be possible to make a cordless steam mop by using the same principle as a storage heater or by using a propane burner to heat the water. Surprised no ones done one yet.
Wonderful post.Never knew this, thanks for letting me know.
But there are a host of steam mops in the US, with great reviews. I would guess that the manufacturers do not see a big enough market in the U.K. I would use the example of electric toothbrushes, it took about 3 to 5 years before it crossed the pond.
There are many on Amazon, but none of these are cordless. All of these steam mops need to be kept plugged in while mopping.
